This fast-producing and vigorous variety forms a nicely rounded mound of bright, colorful foliage, emerging yellow-green before transitioning to bright, fiery red. Grown primarily for foliage, it provides excellent color contrast in the landscape or in containers.

Sunjoy Fast Neo Japanese Barberry will grow to be about 3 feet tall at maturity, with a spread of 4 feet. It tends to fill out right to the ground and therefore does not necessarily require facer plants in front. It grows at a slow rate and under ideal conditions can be expected to live for approximately 20 years.

This shrub does best in full sun to partial shade. It is very adaptable to both dry and moist growing conditions but will not tolerate standing water. It benefits from an application of bonemeal or mycorrhizal fertilizer at the time of planting. It is not particular about soil type or pH and can handle environmental salt. It is highly tolerant of urban pollution and will even thrive in inner city environments. This is a selected variety of a species not originally native to North America.

Sunjoy Fast Neo Japanese Barberry makes a fine choice for the outdoor landscape and is also well suited for use in outdoor pots and containers. Due to its height, it is often used as a thriller in the spiller-thriller-filler container combination and should be planted near the center of the pot. It is sizeable enough to be grown alone in a suitable container. Plants grown in containers may not perform exactly as indicated on the tag and typically require more frequent watering than those grown in the landscape.
