Double Take Scarlet Flowering Quince
Chaenomeles speciosa 'Scarlet Storm'

Height: 6 feet
Spread: 6 feet
Sunlight: Full sun
Hardiness Zone: 5a
Other Names: Common Quince

Description:
A medium-sized shrub covered with vivid scarlet flowers in spring. This profuse bloomer is thornless and does not produce fruit, making it a single-season showstopper that adds bold color early in the landscape. Prune as needed to maintain shape.

Ornamental Features:
Double Take Scarlet Flowering Quince features showy double scarlet, cup-shaped flowers with buttery yellow eyes along the branches in early spring before the foliage emerges. The flowers are excellent for cutting. It has green deciduous foliage that emerges red in spring, and the glossy oval leaves do not develop notable fall color.

Landscape Attributes:
Double Take Scarlet Flowering Quince is a dense multi-stemmed deciduous shrub with a more or less rounded form. Its average texture blends into the landscape but can be balanced by one or two finer or coarser trees or shrubs for an effective composition.

This shrub requires occasional maintenance and upkeep and should only be pruned after flowering to avoid removing the current season's blooms. Deer do not particularly care for this plant and usually leave it alone. It has no significant negative characteristics.

Double Take Scarlet Flowering Quince is recommended for the following landscape applications:
- Mass Planting
- Hedges and Screening
- General Garden Use

Planting & Growing:
Double Take Scarlet Flowering Quince will grow to be about 6 feet tall at maturity, with a spread of 6 feet. It fills out right to the ground and does not necessarily require facer plants in front. It is suitable for planting under power lines. It grows at a medium rate and under ideal conditions can be expected to live for 40 years or more.

This shrub should only be grown in full sunlight. It is very adaptable to both dry and moist locations and performs well under average home landscape conditions. It is not particular about soil type or pH. It is highly tolerant of urban pollution and will even thrive in inner city environments. This is a selected variety of a species not originally native to North America.
