Emerald Green Arborvitae
Thuja occidentalis 'Smaragd'

Height: 12 feet
Spread: 4 feet
Sunlight: Full sun / Partial shade
Hardiness Zone: 4a
Other Names: Eastern White Cedar

Description:
A classic narrow evergreen commonly planted in rows for hedging, this upright arborvitae features dense foliage held in vertical sprays that remain bright green year round. It is hardy, adaptable, takes pruning well, and benefits from protection against harsh winter sun.

Ornamental Features:
Emerald Green Arborvitae is a dwarf conifer valued for its rigidly columnar form. It has rich emerald green evergreen foliage, with scale-like sprays that maintain their color throughout the winter.

Landscape Attributes:
Emerald Green Arborvitae is a dense multi-stemmed evergreen shrub with a narrowly upright, columnar growth habit. Its relatively fine texture sets it apart from plants with less refined foliage.

This is a relatively low maintenance shrub. When pruning is necessary, only trim back the current season's new growth, aside from removing any dieback. It has no significant negative characteristics.

Emerald Green Arborvitae is recommended for the following landscape applications:
- Vertical Accent
- Mass Planting
- Hedges and Screening
- General Garden Use

Planting & Growing:
Emerald Green Arborvitae will grow to be about 12 feet tall at maturity, with a spread of 4 feet. It fills out right to the ground and does not necessarily require facer plants in front. It is suitable for planting under power lines. It grows at a slow rate and under ideal conditions can be expected to live for approximately 30 years.

This shrub performs best in full sun to partial shade and prefers average to moist growing conditions. It should not be allowed to dry out. It is not particular about soil type or pH and is somewhat tolerant of urban pollution. Planting in a sheltered location and applying a thick mulch around the root zone in winter helps protect it in exposed or colder microclimates. This is a selection of a native North American species.
