Berberis thunbergii 'NCBX3'

Description:
A stunning shrub that brings bold color into the landscape. Fiery red foliage emerges in spring and matures to deep burgundy with lime green margins by fall. Its compact, mounded habit makes it excellent for containers or as an accent in garden beds.

Ornamental Features:
Sunjoy Really Red Japanese Barberry has attractive dark red foliage edged in lime green with hints of burgundy, emerging red in spring on a plant with a rounded habit of growth. The small glossy oval leaves are highly ornamental and turn an outstanding scarlet in fall. It also features tiny clusters of yellow flowers hanging below the branches in mid spring.

Landscape Attributes:
Sunjoy Really Red Japanese Barberry is a dense multi-stemmed deciduous shrub with a more or less rounded form. Its relatively fine texture sets it apart from other landscape plants with less refined foliage.

This is a relatively low maintenance shrub and can be pruned at any time. Deer do not particularly care for this plant and usually leave it alone in favor of tastier treats. Gardeners should be aware of the following characteristic that may warrant special consideration:
- Spiny

Sunjoy Really Red Japanese Barberry is recommended for the following landscape applications:
- Mass Planting
- Hedges and Screening
- General Garden Use

Planting & Growing:
Sunjoy Really Red Japanese Barberry will grow to be about 3 feet tall at maturity, with a spread of 3 feet. It tends to fill out right to the ground and therefore does not necessarily require facer plants in front. It grows at a fast rate and under ideal conditions can be expected to live for approximately 20 years.

This shrub does best in full sun to partial shade. It is very adaptable to both dry and moist growing conditions but will not tolerate standing water. It is considered drought tolerant, making it an excellent choice for low-water gardens or xeriscape applications. It benefits from an application of bonemeal or mycorrhizal fertilizer at planting. It is not particular about soil type or pH and can handle environmental salt. It is highly tolerant of urban pollution and will even thrive in inner city environments. This is a selected variety of a species not originally native to North America.
